Fort Portal Catholic Diocese has announced the successful completion of the highly anticipated Our Lady Of Snows Virika Cathedral renovation project, which took one year to finish. The renovation works, valued at approximately 3.6 billion shillings, were officially handed over to the diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhirwa Akiiki, and the Renovation Committee Chairperson, MSGR Isaiah Mayombo.

According to Msgr. Mayombo the Diocesan vicar General, “The renovation involved extensive improvements, including a new roof, flooring, and several other crucial upgrades, all of which came with a significant cost.” He commended the contractor, Ambitious Contractors, for the high-quality work done throughout the process. “We are pleased with the work done by the contractor, and we appreciate their commitment to delivering a quality project,” Msgr. Mayombo said.

Eng. Deo Katekere Rubongoya, Chairperson of the construction committee, praised the contractors for their timely work, noting that it is rare for projects to be completed within the promised year. “The project has been delivered as expected, and we are confident in the value it offers,” he said.

The renovation features exceptional quality roofing materials, including Gage 24 iron sheets imported from abroad. Peter Odel from Ambitious Contractors affirmed that the materials used are top-notch, and they stand by their work. “The materials used are of exceptional quality, and we are proud of the work we have done,” Odel said.

Rt. Rev. Bishop Robert K. Muhirwa Akiiki expressed deep appreciation for the contractors and generous supporters who made the renovation possible. “This project has been a collective effort, and we are deeply grateful to all who contributed,” he said.

However, Bishop Muhirwa announced that there will be no Christmas prayers at Virika Cathedral this year, emphasizing that the church will take the necessary time to assess whether the work meets the required standards before moving forward. “We want to ensure that the renovation meets our expectations, and we will not rush into using the cathedral until we are satisfied,” he said.
