Uganda Postpones Martyrs’ Day Celebrations Over Ebola Threat

The Government of Uganda has announced the postponement of Martyrs’ Day celebrations following consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders.

According to the statement signed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the decision was made due to the Ebola outbreak currently affecting Eastern Congo, from where thousands of pilgrims travel annually to Uganda for the celebrations.

Authorities say the new date for Martyrs’ Day will be communicated later.

Ugandans, especially pilgrims who had already started their journey, are being advised to return home, continue observing health precautionary measures, report suspected cases, and encourage anyone feeling unwell to seek medical attention immediately.

“The protection of life must come first,” the statement emphasized.
