Launch and Groundbreaking Ceremony of Bweya Elderly Priests’ Centre Held in Kampala Archdiocese
The Launch and Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Bweya Elderly Priests’ Centre was successfully held at St. Francis Xavier Bweya Sub-Parish, Kabulamuliro Parish in the Kampala Archdiocese.
The ceremony was officiated by Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala, who presided over the event alongside several priests from different parishes, religious leaders and hundreds of Catholics from within and outside the parish.
Among the notable guests was the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, Dr. Pius Male, together with other clergy and faithful who gathered in support of the initiative aimed at caring for elderly priests and other elderly persons within the Archdiocese.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Kanyike Edward, Chairman of SAAFU, encouraged Catholics to continue supporting the project by mobilizing fellow Christians across the Archdiocese to contribute towards the construction and sustainability of the centre. He urged each Catholic to contribute at least UGX 10,000 annually to support the SAAFU project.
In his remarks, Archbishop Ssemogerere thanked all the faithful and institutions that supported SAAFU last year. He noted that just as Catholics contributed generously towards the Toyota project, they should continue extending the same support to SAAFU this year.
The Archbishop emphasized that the Elderly Centre is not only intended for elderly priests but will also benefit other elderly persons within the Archdiocese.
During the fundraising session, several contributions and pledges were made towards the project, including:
Centenary Bank pledged UGX 20 million
Gayaza Parish contributed a cheque worth UGX 15 million
Mr. Balikuddembe from Centenary Bank pledged UGX 5 million
Cash contributions totaling UGX 3,050,000
The total amount raised, including cash, cheques, and pledges, amounted to UGX 53,050,000.
