Caritas Fort Portal Brings Hope to Ntoroko Flood Victims
Victims of the devastating floods in Ntoroko have received a lifeline from Caritas Fort Portal, which donated relief shelter worth 200 million shillings. The donation, comprising 10 tents with 100 capacities and over 400 tarpaulins, aims to provide shelter to vulnerable communities, churches, schools, and health centers.
According to Rev. Fr. Joseph Musana, Director of Caritas Fort Portal, the relief was made possible through a crisis modification fund funded by the government of Belgium through Caritas International Belgium.
The Ntoroko district has been grappling with floods since 2019, resulting in the creation of 11 camps for over 9,000 victims. Wilfred Sekanabo, the district’s disaster focal person, acknowledged the government’s plans to reallocate the victims but noted the challenges in doing so, as many are fishermen and herdsmen who rely on Lake Albert for their livelihood.
The RDC Ntoroko district, Rtd. Major Johns Mugabirwe, expressed gratitude for Caritas Fort Portal’s support and advised victims to scale down their cattle herds and purchase land in flood-free areas.
Simon Kanyoro, chairperson of the Butorwa, Rwentomi, and Rwenyana camp, thanked Caritas for the donation, highlighting the dire need for shelter among the victims. He appealed to other organizations and well-wishers to provide further support.
