Catholics in Uganda Celebrate 143years Since the First Eucharistic Mass at Mapeera Nabulagala

On Saturday 25th June 2022, Catholics in Uganda gathered at Mapeera Nabulagala Parish, Kampala to jointly celebrate a glorious anniversary of 143years since the missionaries celebrated the first Eucharistic Mass in Uganda.

This mega celebration opened with a sacrifice of Holy Mass at 10am led by Rt.Rev.Francis Aqurinus Kibira the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kasese, Western Uganda and assisted by Rev. Fr. Alex Kamanzi a diocesan Priest from Kasese diocese who is now a lecturer at St. Mary’s National Major Seminary, Ggaba among other priests who presided at the Function. In his homily, Bishop Kibira reminded the faithful about the meaning of the celebration to Uganda, Africa and the World and said that celebrating the first Eucharistic mass is a glorious honor , and a blessing from God to his people and a sign of divine Love upon Uganda.

Eucharist is a memorial and rememberance of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection which become a sign of love upon the world and recall of a new and eternal covenant that is in the signs of bread and wine, representing the body and blood of our Lord where God’s people share on his divinity and Eternity.

Eucharist is a word derived from a Greek phrase “Eucharisteo” meaning: Thanksgiving and for this day, is a Thanksgiving day to thank God for accepting to offer his only son to redeem us, and to thank the missionaries who did great evangelization in Uganda especially preparing this day for Us to celebrate ” the Prelate said.

At this celebration , more than 200 young Catholics received their first Holy communion in the Body and blood of Christ and in challenge, the celebrant Bishop Kibira asked parents to offer much in better upbringing of their children by taking them to school and teaching them about the Catholic faith such that they become fruitful responsible and exemplary Ugandan Catholics in future.
