A Ugandan Priest Appointed Bishop in the USA by Pope Leo XIV: Celebrate Fr. Simon Peter Engurait, Bishop Elect of Houma-Thibodaux

 

The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has announced the appointment of Msgr. Simon Peter Engurait as the new Bishop of Houma-Thibodaux, United States. Previously serving as the diocesan administrator of the same see, Msgr. Engurait’s appointment marks a significant moment for the diocese

**Curriculum Vitae**

Msgr. Simon Peter Engurait was born on August 28, 1971, in Ngora, Uganda. He began his religious education at Saint Peter Minor Seminary in Soroti and continued at Saint Peter College in Tororo, Uganda. He holds a degree in Political Sciences and Public Administration from Makerere University, Uganda, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands.

After moving to the United States, he pursued further studies in philosophy and theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, where he obtained a Master of Divinity degree.

Ordained a priest on May 25, 2013, for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Msgr. Engurait has held various positions throughout his ministry. He served as a parish vicar at the Cathedral from 2013 to 2015, at Saint Genevieve from 2015 to 2016, and at Christ the Redeemer from 2016 to 2017. Since 2017, he has been the parish priest of Saint Bridget. Additionally, he served as moderator of the Curia from 2016 to 2024 and vicar general from 2017 to 2024, before becoming diocesan administrator in 2024.

As he prepares to take on this important role, the community looks forward to celebrating his leadership as Bishop of Houma-Thibodaux.
