BAKYENGA THE RAY OF GENEROSITY
The name Bakyenga signifies understanding or understanding in the Runyakore language. His Grace Paul K. Bakyenga embodies the virtue of generosity, reflecting his understanding of the lives of the poor and needy.
In January 2023, I had a personal encounter with the late Archbishop Emeritus, witnessing his generosity. During my visit to his residence, he inquired about my transportation expenses. Though I deceived him by stating only half the amount, he was aware of the actual cost. I deceived him because I observed him receiving calls from individuals seeking help. Astonishingly, he admitted his inability to assist them due to lack of funds. Despite this, he insisted I accept the money he offered, threatening to ban me from visiting again. Later, he arranged for financial assistance to the three individuals, Despite him whispering to his driver that he had no money for fuel to visit his personal doctor, I overheard him.
He was known for helping even those who didn’t ask for assistance, truly embodying generosity. We can learn the concept of generosity from his way of life, making him deserving of being a patron saint of generosity.
Generosity, as a virtue, holds significant importance in ethical traditions. To understand its meaning, we must consider its relationship with hospitality, liberality, love, and charity. Generosity raises questions about humanity, God, and the human-divine connection. For Christians, generosity aligns one not only with Christ but also with the loving divine Parent, whose self-sacrifice enables fellowship in the divine life. Paul Bakyenga translated this understanding across various domains, urging humans to explore generosity. We should recognize that generosity involves giving beyond one’s means and being open to receiving help when in need.
Once, I asked the late Archbishop about the motivation behind his generosity. His response remains etched in my memory: “When we trust in God’s provision, we can be confident that He will meet our needs. Giving to others allows us to rely on God rather than our wealth or possessions.” This has led me to conclude that givers are rewarded proportionately to their giving, never lacking in return.
Generosity is not determined by one’s wealth, but by their faith. Giving enables us to tangibly demonstrate our trust in God. “The more we give, the more joy we find in giving, and the more joy God finds in us… God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
