By Arua Diocese Communications Department
Lima Parish overflowed with joy and devotion as Christians gathered for a fundraising celebration to support the ongoing construction of the new church foundation. Bishop Sabino Ocan Odoki presided over the event, emphasizing the importance of unity among all religious denominations as one people of God. In his address, the Bishop expressed deep gratitude for the generosity and giving spirit of the faithful in the Arua Diocese, invoking God’s blessings upon them and encouraging continued commitment to the Church’s growth.
The occasion was attended by the Parish Priest of Lima, Rev. Fr. Modestor, alongside priests from Koboko and Kaya Parishes, as well as religious sisters and brothers. The expected Guest of Honor was Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja. Notable dignitaries present included Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, Minister of State for Education and Sports and Woman MP for Moyo District, joined by other Members of Parliament, district leaders, and cultural figures.
Bishop Sabino praised Rev. Fr. Modestor for organizing the successful fundraiser and thanked him for the invitation. Despite commitments in Rwanda, where he was representing Uganda’s bishops, the Bishop said he could not delegate this significant event. He highlighted Lima Parish’s special place in his heart, noting it was the first parish he elevated upon beginning his mission in the diocese. Witnessing its new church take shape, he said, brings him immense joy and fulfillment.
Reflecting on the legacy of the Comboni Missionaries, Bishop Sabino recognized their contributions to faith, education, healthcare, and social services, which have uplifted communities. He urged Christians to build on this foundation and take responsibility for their Church’s future.
The Bishop called for harmony among religious groups, encouraging Muslims, Anglicans, Catholics, and others to collaborate in faith-based initiatives that honor one God. He stressed that such unity strengthens both belief and community well-being.
Drawing from a recent study session with bishops in Kampala, Bishop Sabino shared insights on synodality and the need for Africa’s Church to pursue self-sustainability. He described the fundraising event as a powerful example of self-reliance, urging Christians to take ownership of their Church’s development.
Commending Koboko Parish as a model of excellence, the Bishop also addressed concerns about financial transparency. He cautioned some Christians and politicians against misusing church funds for personal gain, stressing the need for accountability. Assuring the congregation of his office’s commitment to openness, he invited anyone with concerns to seek answers through diocesan channels rather than the media.
Bishop Sabino concluded with a passionate plea for generous contributions to complete the long-delayed church building. He urged the faithful to support this sacred project, ensuring a strong and beautiful house of worship for generations to come.
