Commemorating Four Years of Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga

Today, we commemorate the fourth death anniversary of Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, who served as the Archbishop of the Kampala Archdiocese. Let us continue to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Eternal rest grant him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Additionally, there will be a memorial lecture in memory of the late Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga


on Thursday, April 10, 2025. The event will begin with Mass at Lubaga Cathedral at 3:00 PM, followed by the lecture at the Uganda Catholic Management and Training Institute at 6:00 PM.

Background

His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was born on 19th January 1953, at Kyabakadde, Naggalama, in the present Lugazi Diocese.

He was ordained a priest on 8th April 1978 at Lubaga Cathedral by His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga.

Appointed first Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese on 16th November 1996 and ordained Bishop on 1st March 1997 at Kasana-Luweero.

Appointed the third Archbishop of Kampala on 19th August 2006 and installed as the third Archbishop of Kampala on 30th September 2006 at Lubaga Cathedral.

Biography

Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was born at Naggalama in Mukono district formerly the Archdiocese of Kampala (but now the Diocese of Lugazi) on January 19th 1953.

His Late Father Joseph Nsubuga Wamala was a catechist and he died in 1983. He attended Kyabakadde Primary School and in 1964, he joined Nyenga Seminary. He thereafter entered the National Major Seminary of Philosophy of Katigondo (1972-1974) and in 1974-1978, he studied Theology at the National Seminary of Ggaba. He was ordained a priest on April 9th 1978 by the Late Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga of the Archdiocese of Kampala.

In 1979, he joined the University of Clermont-Ferrand (France) to study a course in administration and languages, with particular focus on administration.

He was appointed Chaplain of His Holiness in 1986. In 1994, he was awarded a Doctorate in Canon Law of the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.

1984 -1990 – Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Kampala

1985 – Executive Secretary of the National Committee for the celebrations of the Centenary of the Uganda Martyrs of Uganda

1986 – 1988 – Administrator of Ndeeba Parish in the Archdiocese of Kampala

1988 – 1990 – Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kampala

1990 – 1994 – Student in Rome

1995 – 1996 – Personal Secretary to Cardinal Wamala, Archbishop of Kampala and President/ Founder of the ‘Co-operative for Development’ as well as a professor of Canon Law at Ggaba National Major Seminary and at St. Mbaaga Archdiocesan Major Seminary

1997 – 2006 – He was named, consecrated and installed as the first Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Kasana – Luweero

2001 – 2006 – Member of the Executive Committee of Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) and Chairman of the Finance and Administrative Committee of UJCC. In July 2006, he was elected president of Caritas – Africa, with the Headquarters in Lome – Togo.

August 19, 2006 – Rt. Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the Bishop of Kasana-Luweero was elected and named the new Archbishop of Kampala.

April 3, 2021 – Was found dead in his house
