Ngetta Babies Home Lira Sounds Alarm Over Rising Child Abandonment cases
Lira, Uganda – The head of Ngetta Baby’s Home in Lira City East Division has sounded the alarm over a worrying surge in child abandonment cases in the area.
Sr. Demmy Frances, in charge of the home, revealed that since July this year, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of infants left behind by their parents. The latest incident occurred just two days ago, when a one-year-old boy was abandoned in Ireda Lumumba cell.
Currently, Ngetta Baby’s Home is caring for 31 abandoned children aged between 0 and 3 years, with 11 housed at the center and 20 being cared for externally.
Sr. Demmy expressed gratitude towards the local police and probation officers for their efforts to combat child abandonment, but emphasized that more needs to be done to address the root causes of this issue.
She urged parents, particularly mothers, to seek constructive solutions to their difficulties with partners instead of resorting to abandonment. Sr. Demmy reminded them that their children could grow up to be future leaders and contributors to society.
The head of Ngetta Baby’s Home also called on the community to act as protectors of children and cautioned men against neglecting their partners when blessed with children, emphasizing that children are a precious gift from God.
In closing, Sr. Demmy extended heartfelt thanks to the well-wishers and community members who consistently support Ngetta Baby’s Home, encouraging them to continue their vital work in aiding those in need.
