Over 200 Foot Pilgrims from Lira Diocese Prepare for Pilgrimage to Namugongo for Uganda Martyrs Day”

Over 200 foot pilgrims from various parishes in Lira Diocese have arrived at the Lira Cathedral ordination grounds in preparation for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebration in Namugongo, Kampala.

Speaking to Lira Diocese Communications team, Goddy Akio, the spokesperson for the Lira Diocese foot pilgrims, stated that the diocese has registered a total of 885 foot pilgrims.

Among those who have arrived at the Uganda Martyrs Cathedral for preparations are four children, and these pilgrims hail from the parishes of Anyeke, Otwal, Ngai, Teboke, Orum, Alanyi, Abongodyang, Ngetta, Aputi, Amolatar, Dokolo, and Bala.

He noted that the number of female pilgrims is higher than that of males, with more expected to arrive.

He expressed joy and gratitude for the safe arrival of the pilgrims, mentioning that the official arrival window at the cathedral parish is from May 12th to 15th. The pilgrims are expected to leave for Namugongo on May 16th, 2025.

Preparatory activities, including the issuance of identity tags and distribution of T-shirts, are currently underway at their center located at St. Kizito Primary School. Akio also noted that today, Wednesday the 14th, the pilgrims will attend a retreat at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral in Lira as they prepare to begin their journey to Namugongo on Friday the 16th.

Some pilgrims who spoke to the reporter shared their happiness about arriving safely at the cathedral. Many expressed that they are spiritually prepared for this year’s celebration, with several sharing their prayers for peace in their families and communities.
