Religious Leaders pray & donate relief Items for Kiteezi Landfill Victims

On Monday 19th August 2024, the Inter – Religious Council Of Uganda (IRCU) donated relief Items, after holding joint Prayers for the Kiteezi Landfill Tragedy victims at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School grounds, where a temporary camp has been set up.

Leaders representing all Religious Denominations of Uganda including Rev. Dr. Moses Odongo, Msgr. Charles Kasibante Vicar General for Kampala Archdiocese, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Wasswa – Deputy Mufti of Uganda, Bishop Andrew Lugolobi of the Pentecostal Church, Archbishop Samuel Kazimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda among others, donated food ( 300 Kilograms of Maize floor) among other items to help the affected, sustain life.

During the Prayer session, they offered prayers for those who lost their lives and the displaced when waste and Garbage uncertainly rolled away and Covered Every living and Shelters in it’s outskirts leaving over 34 dead and about 350 miserably homeless.

The leaders in a joint voice asked government to render help especially immediate relocation of the displaced victims.Additionally,The religious leaders called on the government to respond promptly by providing advice and deploying technical personnel in response to projected disasters. They said that the tragedy would have been avoided if Government thought of management measures of the huge mount waste and garbage that claimed lives of many Ugandans especially the Kiteezi inhibitors, and suggested that Government should think of ways of turning garbage and waste into renewable resources to prevent volume increase of garbage in such places and also sensitizing the public on proper waste disposal.

The Kiteezi Landfill is located in Kasangati Town council, Wakiso District of Kampala City and served as the City’s Primary Waste disposal site since 1997, handling over 2,500 tonnes of waste on a daily basis.

The Collapse of the landfill on 10th August has brought tension and urgent need for a sustainable and better waste management Methods.
