St. Mbaaga Major Seminary Marks 50 Years with Grand Thanksgiving Mass

The long-awaited thanksgiving Mass to mark 50 years of St. Mbaaga Major Seminary burst into life with pomp, colour and solemn splendour, drawing clergy, religious and lay faithful from across the country.

A majestic procession stretched across the seminary grounds as priests and bishops moved in graceful rhythm, clothed in radiant red chasubles in honour of St. Mbaaga, the seminary’s heavenly patron.

The atmosphere blended jubilation with deep reverence, reflecting five decades of priestly formation and service to the Church.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala and notably one of the pioneer seminarians of St. Mbaaga Major Seminary. His presence added historical significance to the golden jubilee, symbolising the fruits of the institution’s earliest years.

In his homily, Archbishop Ssemogerere warmly revisited the seminary’s formative days, recalling moments of fraternity, simplicity and youthful laughter, alongside seasons that demanded discipline and perseverance.

He urged current seminarians to remain faithful to their vocation, reminding them that priesthood “is not a profession to be pursued for status, but a sacred calling rooted in sacrifice and service.”

Special tribute was paid to His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga, the founding father of the seminary, whose foresight and innovation laid a firm foundation for priestly formation at St. Mbaaga. Speakers described him as “a man of great vision and innovation,” whose legacy continues to shape generations of clergy.

The golden jubilee thanksgiving Mass was livestreamed on the Ugandan Catholics Online platform, enabling thousands of faithful within Uganda and in the diaspora to participate in the historic celebration.
