The Rt. Rev. Sabino Ocan Odoki, Bishop of Arua Catholic Diocese, led a requiem mass for the late Hon. Margaret Baba Diri on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at St. Charles Lwanga College grounds in Koboko.

Baba Diri, a trailblazing advocate for persons with disabilities and a dedicated public servant, was laid to rest at the St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Parish Cemetery.

President Yoweri Museveni, in a eulogy delivered by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, praised Baba Diri for her resilience and significant contributions to Uganda’s Parliament over 25 years.

“Hon. Baba Diri was a steadfast advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities and served with integrity, leaving an indelible mark on Uganda,” noted the President.

Vice President Alupo described Baba Diri as a friend who inspired many young women in leadership, emphasizing her commitment to community development and integrity.

Minister Hellen Asamo highlighted Baba Diri’s instrumental role in securing Koboko’s first tarmacked road, municipality status, and a modern market.

During the homily, Bishop Sabino celebrated Baba Diri’s life as one of virtue, resilience, and faith. He commended her contributions as a teacher, public servant, and devoted member of the Church.

“She overcame life’s challenges, including the loss of her husband and her sight, with hope and trust in God,” Bishop Sabino said.

The Bishop emphasized the gospel message of love and charity, lauding Baba Diri’s generosity and dedication to the Church and various organizations for persons with disabilities.

He urged mourners to emulate her virtuous life, which focused on serving others and remaining steadfast in faith.

Baba Diri was born on June 29, 1954, and held a Diploma in Education and a Bachelor’s in Adult and Community Education. She began her career as a teacher at St. Charles Lwanga College before entering politics in 1996 as a representative for persons with disabilities.

She later served as the Koboko District Woman Member of Parliament, contributing to parliamentary committees on commissions, state enterprises, and education.

Baba Diri passed away on January 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, advocacy, and inspiration.
