In a significant step towards improving maternal and newborn healthcare in Uganda, the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau (UCMB) launched the Maternal Newborn Care health system project in the Acholi subregion. The project, which is supported by ELMA, aims to strengthen the healthcare system in the region and reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates.

The two-year project, set to run from July 2024 to June 2026, will target 50 health facilities in the Acholi subregion, including two regional referral hospitals, four general hospitals, nine health center IVs, and 35 health center IIIs. The facilities include Gulu Regional Referral Hospital (GRRH), St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, Dr. Ambrosoli Hospital Kalongo, Kitgum General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital Kitgum, and Anaka General Hospital.

Rev. Fr. Anthony Nyeko, Dean of Holy Rosary Deanery, launched the project on behalf of the Archbishop at Bomah Hotel in Gulu. The event was attended by District Health Officers (DHOs) of the Acholi subregion, the Commissioner of Emergency Medical Services, and the Gulu Archdiocesan team, among others.

This initiative is a testament to the UCMB’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Uganda, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By strengthening the healthcare system and increasing access to quality maternal and newborn care, the project aims to reduce mortality rates and improve the overall health and well-being of mothers and children in the Acholi subregion according to the leadership team.
