Held in Fort Portal city, Bishop Muhiirwa informed the public about the selection of Fort Portal Diocese as the animator of this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day at the Catholic shrine. He called upon the general public to support the organization efforts underway, so as to make successful this year’s celebrations held on the 3rd of June.

Bishop Muhiirwa thanked all people of God for their generosity in contributing to the different diocesan causes such as the recent renovation of the Virika Cathedral roof. He reminded all the people of God about the story and value of the Uganda Martyrs in powerfully witnessing to faith in Jesus Christ.

He gave a brief history of the Uganda Martyrs highlighting how one of the martyrs Saint Adolf Tibeyalirwa was born in Fort Portal Dioces, in Katoosa village, Kyenjojo district.

The bishop who was in the company of the Diocesan Steering Committee announced that this year’s celebrations will be held under the theme “Baptised and sent: To witness Christ with Love and hope.” He elaborated that the diocese and indeed the whole of Uganda will reflect on the reason why the martyrs died, and their example will be an invitation to all the baptized to sacrifice for the sake of Christ.

The Fort Portal Diocesan Uganda Martyrs’ Day Steering Committee is headed by the Pastoral Coordinator Reverend Fr. Charles Oyo, deputized by Fr. Dr. Patrick Birungi who will coordinate Christians from Fort Portal who are resident in Kampala and other surrounding cities. The Steering Committee has sub committees of Finance, Liturgy, Transport, and Protocol and the public was encouraged to contact any of the officials for help or inquiries.

Bishop Muhiirwa urged the public and different institutions to prayerfully and financially support the organizing efforts. He warned the public to guard against fraudsters who will come up in the name of the diocese with intentions of defrauding the public.

Fr. Edward Muhumuza in charge of the Finance Sub Committee presented an estimated budget of 1billion Uganda shillings. He noted that the diocese had so far 14million Uganda shillings.
