Tuesday Class Alumni Association Concludes “The Catholic Children’s Retreat 2023” with Mass and Practical Learning Activities

Yesterday, the retreat organized by Lubaga Cathedral Parish Tuesday Class Alumni Association came to an inspiring end. The Catholic children’s retreat was organized from September 3rd to September 9th. The closing ceremony commenced with a meaningful mass led by Fr. Achilles Mayanja, creating a reflective atmosphere for the participants.

The retreat, which took place at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Gayaza, proved to be a valuable experience for the children involved. They learned about the significance of the mass, delving into its meaning and purpose. Additionally, the children acquired essential prayers, fostering their spiritual growth.

A notable observation made during the Catholic Children’s Retreat 2023″ was the children’s strong desire for playtime. It became clear that they did not have adequate chances for recreational activities at home, as their longing to play continued even into the evening. It was also noticed that parents do not spend enough time praying with their children. Additionally, children are exposed to information that is not beneficial to them, and hence the need for parental guidance was emphasized by Chairman Bahati Benard.

In terms of practical skills, the children received hands-on training during the retreat. They learned how to make liquid soap, petroleum jerry Vaseline and perform basic home tasks such as peeling and washing their plates. It was disheartening to discover that some children couldn’t even handle a knife, emphasizing the importance of equipping them with essential life skills.

Furthermore, the Catholic Children’s Retreat aimed to expose the children to agricultural practices. They had the opportunity to plant maize, offering them valuable insights into farming techniques and fostering a deeper appreciation for the process.

The retreat also facilitated the formation of new friendships among the children. They were grouped into different “Obubondo” groups, each headed by a “Ssabakristu” representative, which aimed to instill an understanding of leadership structures within the church community.

During the closing ceremony, certificates of appreciation and merit were presented to the generous sponsors who supported the retreat. The children were also acknowledged for their active participation and growth throughout the program.

To conclude the event, vibrant performances and exhibitions took place, showcasing the talents and cultural heritage of the participants. Additionally, as a gesture of environmental responsibility, trees were planted to promote a greener future.

The Catholic Children’s Retreat 2023 organized by the Lubaga Cathedral Parish Tuesday Class Alumni Association proved to be an enriching experience for all involved, fostering spiritual growth, practical skills, friendships, and a deeper appreciation for culture and nature.

The Patron Fr Achilles Mayanja provided each child with a rosary, a catechism book in both English and Luganda, and a fruit seedling from the National Forestry Authority, to be planted at their homes. This was intended to teach them the importance of conservation at a young age.

This Catholic Children’s retreat will be organized annually.

We express our gratitude to the organizing committee, led by Mr. Bahati Benard, Chairman of the Tuesday Class Association, as well as the parents who have made it possible for their children to participate.
